Strata Pass

The kiosk

The kiosk is a Chromebook in the classroom opened to yourdistrict.stratasuite.app/pass/kiosk. It belongs to one teacher's room, or to a shared space such as a library that has its own location kiosk. Students use it without an account. The code is typed every time the kiosk page opens.

Signing in

The page shows a numeric keypad. Type your eight-digit kiosk code (the Kiosk chip on your dashboard shows it). If you belong to more than one school, the device then asks which school it serves. The device is now in kiosk mode for your room and shows your name at the top. A location kiosk's code (a library, an office) works the same way: the device serves that location and shows its name, and its students sign out from that location. After 10 wrong codes in a minute from one school's network, or 50 across the district, code entry waits up to a minute; a code that works never counts. The kiosk never asks for a password.

What a student does

  1. Type your student number and press Enter. The screen shows your name and photo so you can check it is you. Not me goes back.
  2. Tap a destination. The screen says "Go ahead" with the time to be back by. That is the pass; you can leave.
  3. When you return, type your number again. The screen shows only your name and photo with I'm back; tap it, and "Welcome back" says the check-in went through.

A pass that ended by itself at its limit is over; the kiosk offers the destinations, not I'm back. Appointments do not go through the kiosk; your teacher sends you. The kiosk offers only the places switched on for it. Each screen goes back to the number box by itself: Where to? and the I'm back screen after twenty seconds without a touch, "Go ahead" and "Welcome back" after a few seconds.

When the kiosk says no

The screen says plainly what stopped the pass: the student number was not found, the student's kiosk passes for the day are used up (a Pass Exception of 0 reads the same way), kiosk passes are not available at this time (with the block-out schedule's note under it), or another student from the room is already out. Anything else, such as a party pass group, reads only "This pass is not allowed right now." A student already out from another room is told which room to check in at first. The teacher's dashboard has the full picture.

How a kiosk ends

A kiosk stays signed in as long as its page stays open. Closing the tab signs it out, and restarting the Chromebook or reloading the page brings back the code screen; type the code again. Anyone with Pass site administration can also end the device under Manage, Kiosks, and regenerating your code ends every device on the old one. It never signs out on a clock. Ending a kiosk never ends the students' passes.

The device itself

The kiosk page asks the Chromebook to keep its screen on while it is showing; a device power policy in Google Admin can still put it to sleep, and a sleeping device drops off the kiosk count until it wakes. Strata Pass cannot lock the Chromebook. Your technology department pins the kiosk page with a managed guest session or a kiosk policy in Google Admin. The device holds no staff credential. On a device that is not pinned, a student can do more than close the tab: while the kiosk is signed in, another tab can load student photos from it.
